The Madhatters Mediaeval Banquet - 2000
FRIDAY 10th - SUN 12th November 2000
The Old School Hotel, Fore Street,  Port Isaac, Cornwall. PL28 3RB

Click here to see the Photos

The Madhatters reunion of 2000 saw a revisit to The Old School Hotel in Port Isaac, Cornwall. With 64 people in attendance it was a fantastic 3 day weekend - the highlight of which was the Banquet on the Saturday night with much singing, merrymaking and eating.

Lord Mike Crane and Lady Caroline Payne presided over the evening as King and Queen. Much of the Banquet was a rowdy affair with talk of a royal overthrow in the guise of Roger the pretender,  Lord Hennings' humiliation, the curse of 'the Spoons' and Lord Adrian's lack of decorum, fi diddle.

If that's sounded like fun the weekend was completed with a cheesy Karaoke on the Friday night and a 'bracing' tour of the castle in Tintagel. Anyway if you came we'd be delighted if you would leave your thoughts on the weekend...

The Invite

Port Issac by night

As a most valued member of Madhatters and its extended family you have been invited to a damn fine shindig. We have organised an extended weekend in the sleepy village of Port Isaac, Cornwall to have a long overdue get together. Port Isaac is on the NW coast of cornwall, close by to the town of Tintagel where legend has it, lies the ruins of King Arthurs Castle.

portissac2.jpg (14394 bytes)The main event is a Mediaeval Banquet, which will be on the Saturday night in the Hotel itself. This will consist of singing, toasting, eating, drinking, singing, drinking, eating, drinking, singing, more drinking and eventually sleeping. However those who remeber the previous banquet we had here will be pleased that we are having a party on the Friday night as well! This will involve you having to take the day off on Friday, Cornwall is a good few hours drive from where most of you live and we need to see you all by 6.30pm latest on the Friday night - giving time to check in, freshen up and get settled before we start the revellery.

Of course the most marvellous thing about it all is that no-one will have to drive, go home early and the bar stays open as long as we want it! Organised for the Saturday is a bracing walk along the coast to the castle ruins, caves and cliffs. So give yourself a break, get some fresh air and escape from the rat race for a great weekend.

COST: £75 per person, includes 2 nights Bed, Breakfast and Banquet.

Oops Joanne. Have I left you slightly unfurnished with info. I am ever so sorry. I told Kev that you suggested Watfoed Underground Station and gave him your phone no. last week. I'll talk to him tomorrow and then call you to ensure all is OK.

Help! I have run into serious problems getting to Port Isaac. The trains to the West aren't running well and the roads are pretty much flooded around here leaving me with few National Xpress choices. I can get to anywhere in London though so if anyone has a seat free in their car and are heading from London please please let me know. Cheers Bill

Anyone know how I jumped one space in the alphabetical heirarchy on the left? must be magic or something... Also anyone know what time they're picking me up on Friday and from where? This question is particularly aimed at Kevin Goodhand who is apparently driving me there.

I am establishing a Devon & Cornwall petrolwatch. Will keep you posted. Any suggestions for beating the petrol blockade? My trick was to marry a nurse, that normally works. Any better (and cheaper) tips out there?

I hate to worry anyone but please do make sure you have enough Petrol to get to Cornwall. Bloody sod's law isn't it. Still, we shall see how it all pans out. Remember, stockpiling petrol in your home is dangerous.

Nick, I suppose I could email you but its quicker to do this. We realised we had too many people coming down. Most of whom would not be up for £50 lunch so we knocked Stein on the head. I'd eat the apple pie as I think Paradise is overrated and I'd rather have the knowledge. (Actually If I did have to make the choice Eve did I think I would eat the snake)

Er, yes. Thrice fold. We'll see you there. On that note I heard a rumour that you were planning a trip to Rick Stein's place in Padstow. He's got three now, plus a deli, plus a take away. The restaurants are all expensive (£30 /head plus) and booked out for weeks. I've tried in previous visits (we normally go for a w/e every year to Padstow). Lovely place, but closed Sept - May. I mean thr town, not just the restaurant. See you in Eden. I managed to find a particularly pendulous fig leaf so we should be ok. We'll have lunch there, apparently the food is very good, but stay away from the apple pie.

Ken - do you fancy a visit to the Eden Project in Cornwall on the way? It's a millennium project like the Dome. Only people visit this one.

Can I just mention that if you haven't already, please leave an e-mail address so people can contact you (the e-mail address wasn't working before but it is now!)

I'll be driving from an executive high-powered business meeting in Slough from 15:00 - if anyone requires a lift get in touch. Sadly I have four spaces - Jen will mostly be also riding the Roachs (that is..with them).

Sarah and I will be driving from South Devon, with plenty of space in the car. Not that anyone else lives within 200 miles of here, but I just thought I'd rub your noses in it. Should take us about an hour an half. Ya boo sucks.

Just to let you know, I might be travelling from St Albans in a Sharan with the Roach's. No room for anyone else probably, but that's what I'm doing so feck the lot of you. (notice my misspelling of fuck in order to avoid the sensors, doh!)

Just to let you know, in case anyone wants a lift, Ken, Sarah, Josie, Sion & I will be travelling down in two cars. So there is room for anyone else, if they’re on the wayish, or can get to MK station.

How about some nice photo's from the last banquet to wet our appetites

Me and Kath Whibley are going to be driving down together from Yorkshire / Manchester, if there are any others around in this area then we have a couple of spaces in the car (although I think that they will have to be prepared for an early start - there are a fair few miles between here and Cornwall)!!

Thanks everyone for making this, my first banquet, truly one to remember, although I seemed to have forgotten some of the late night bits - Oink. Also cheers to Adrian for managing not to piss on me instead of the toilet in his drunken state as I felt my bed was dangerously close.

One felt one's conduct was conducive to one's surroundings. Flirting with youth, though maids when your young never wed this old man. I think it was evident I thorougly enjoyed myself. Cheers Davey P......

It was a pleasure to meet you and the rest of the Madhatters at the weekend and I would like to thank you for arranging such a fantastic event, I would also like to thank Melissa for graciously inviting me along. Although not being an official member of your drama society you all made me feel very welcome and I'm very happy to have met such a great gang of people. Best wishes - Mark Birnage (Robin Hood)

I'd very much like to thank all of you for making this weekend a fantastic success. It was worth every ounce of organisation and has given me renewed vigour for organising a more regular reunion than 'every 4 years'. I hope you feel the same! My one regret is that I didn't get to have intelligible conversations with everyone, I would like to now apologise if my brain was not functioning this weekend. I was drunk, tired or chilled, but I had a fantastic time. I would also now like to officially say goodbye to everyone as I am sure I didn't see everyone on Sunday morning. Also, If you didn't hear, Louise and the hotel staff thought we were fantastic - much more interesting than the last party of chartered accountants! It will be nice if you could add your comments onto this page too. Also once you start getting photos back, please feel free to post or e-mail the good ones to me for inclusion on the site.
