The Sea

Based in the 1880's, The Sea, a tragi-comedy written by Edward Bond was first aired by HPDS in December 1988. The society who were taken perhaps a little too seriously at the time for a Poly Drama Soc, were long in tradition and run by a very serious humanities lecturer in green espradrilles and white socks. That said, what we have here is a very long play with many long monologues and dramatic pauses. The Sea was performed over a 3 night run, with seating and set on the main hall stage.

The setting; a Victorian Seaside Town, very insular and unwilling to offer comfort to strange folk. A young man, Mr Carson played by Andy Farrugia, is out on a a boating trip with his friend who is engaged to be married to a local girl - Rose, played by Lyn Minay. The pair get into difficulties and the fiancé drowns. (Incidentally the corpse played by Vincent Thurgood goes on to perform one of those 'classic' stiff roles as made famous by so many other red jersey wearers throught the years). The townsfolk begin navel-gazing as they try to come to terms with the tragic death of the young man, but yet they offer limited sympathy. Meanwhile, Mr Carson has to visit Rose to tell her that her 'husband to be' has drowned. What ensues is quite frankly, a bit fruity and disgusts the local Draper, Frank Mason who misreading the situation entirely, attempts to murder the washed up corpse, who he thinks is Mr Carson, when it appears on the beach the next day. Huh?

Needless to say the Draper becomes wracked with guilt and ends up going mad when Mr Carson suddenly re-appears scattering the ashes of his dead friend at the funeral. This entire incident reflects badly on the entire community, from the Vicar to the local Fishermen.

Most notably, The Sea gave rise to the acting talents of the 'then young' Steve Phipps - as a Vicar of all things. Simon Smith had his very first outing with the Main Hall rig and staging. And who's that in the cowboy hat? Surely not Mike Haver - why, yes it is...

As for the rest of the cast, this is where it gets a bit hazy. Reaching into the history books of the Drama society, we know very little about the history of the cast and crew before this time. For instance, the lovely Jane Panter, where are you now? Gil Rutherford - thanks for giving us such entertainment when you fell off the stage. Oh so many memories.

It's quite scary to come across the details of the play. I played Rose and it was my first production. I also drew the programme for The Sea and for the next couple of plays. I was in one other play after The Sea, unfortunately, I can't remember what it was called now! I actually have a set of all the photos taken of the production, and I even have (somewhere) a video that somebody produced! Unfortunately, I lost touch with most of the others, but would love to know how and what they are up to! I'm now a marketing executive for a publishing company in Edinburgh....getting other people to design jackets and leaflets!
